ace-feat

Ace hotel is an innovative hotel chain based in Portland, Seattle, Palm Springs and New York. The charm of the hotels is based on the creative atmosphere, art and design. But also their support for the local community and culture is admirable. By chance you may find a flea market, pop up shop (as with Opening Ceremony), a pilates club or an exhibition which are all very well curated. Or how about free haircut by the pool or breakfast served with Stumptown coffee. It’s all about the details from Pendleton blankets to custom made bathrobes (by Wings+Horns).

Here’s a glimpse inside the Ace hotels:

The renowned London-based publishing house Hamish Hamilton has a monthly magazine out called Five Dials. This great literary piece features a wide variety of texts and interviews by world class authors from the past to the present

As stated on their website, “Five Dials is best downloaded, printed out and enjoyed (we hope) away from the computer”. We agree!

Unpackaged

Come in and refill your dry goods, oils and household products.”

Unpackaged is a store in London selling food without packaging. This very simple and honest approach “makes it easy for customers to do the right thing – the right thing for themselves and for the environment.” The product selection comprises mostly of organic and environmentally friendly products, mostly from local producers and suppliers.

Aside from the obvious, the store serves the surrounding neighborhood by providing an easy-going place for social gathering where the returning customers from around the block  bump into each other while purchasing their daily oatmeal and fruit. A kind of vibrant positive buzz that might be surprisingly rare to find these days.

Here’s the idea as it is:

1. Remember to bring your containers* from home
2. Come to Unpackaged and say hello
3. Weigh your containers, then choose the product and amount you want
4. Take your goods home in your own containers (if you forget, you can buy reusable containers here)
5. When you’ve run out, come back for a refill, simple as that!

Glassphemy-Rendering22

Smashing glass bottles straight at the faces of your friends as way of recycling? Sounds like an excellent channel for both blowing off some steams and doing green at the same time. That’s exactly what a NYC-based urban redevelopment company Macro-Sea has created with their latest project called Glassphemy, a huge steel structure with bulletproof glass walls and touch sensitive light effects.

Through the installation, bottles collected from local bars turn into splinter remnants that can be used as material for new objects like tumbler and other drinking glasses as well as completely new innovative creations composed in design contests. Needless to say, the participants are undoubtedly having a blast not-normally related to recycling.

Rules for My Unborn Son

Boys must have rules. Usually these rules are passed on to boys by their fathers and grandfathers, great grandfathers, fathers-in-laws, uncles and so on. The book by Walker Lamond is an excellent collection of these wise rules every Good Man, at all age, should know of. The book is full of advice from modern gentlemen and fine men throughout the course of history.

The craze started in 2009 when the author, Walker Lamond, started collecting these advices in his blog.

…as many of the rules are distillations of some universal lessons in ethics and etiquette. I have made efforts to cull the classics from the outmoded. After all, all that is old is good. However, what I hope makes Rules For My Unborn Son unique is the inclusion of lessons drawn from my own experiences-the good, the bad, and the ugly.”
